Portal Page - Major Issues
« on: May 24, 2009, 12:45:04 AM »
I just upgraded my website to SMF 1.1.9 and SimplePortal 2.2.1

http://www.eq2fallen.com/forum/index.php

The issue I'm having is the right side block starts to cover up and bleed over the center block for anyone w/ a smaller screen or less resolution. Is there any way to tweak the settings so it doesn't move like this? This problem wasn't there w/ my earlier version.

I wouldn't call this a major issue. The pictures at the center are too big to fit in that small area. I suggest using an image resizing mod. You can find one in SMF Mod Site.

If you were happy with the layout you had before, see this:

I spoke too soon. Could very well be something on my end, but my quick check earlier didn't reveal that on all OSes and browsers I now get this after the 2.2.1 install:

I restored a backup from yesterday and all went back to normal. Reinstalled 2.2.1 and it's back like the above screener. Installs fine, no errors in the log. If one of the SP folks has any idea why I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks.

Probably the new property (table-layout: fixed;) in portal.css file caused this issue. It was added to some bugs about the main table for SMF 2.0. It should have been okay with SMF 1.1.8, however, I guess it caused issue because of the numerous HTML errors in your theme. If you are happy with how 2.2 looks, just remove this line from Themes/default/portal.css:

Code: [Select]
table-layout: fixed;
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

well - it seemed major to me. I'm a complete newb w/ doing a web-site and am kind of just doing this via logic and trial and error. It seems the side blocks are a fixed width and the center seems to get smashed between the 2 sides depending upon screen resolution/size. It looks just fine for me at 1920x1200 on a 24" screen, but many people who use the forum complained about this issue on the front portal page. I'm not sure what exactly that post is saying to do with that fixed table layout code. Is that supposed to be removed or altered in some way - or is my only option to use smaller pictures to accomodate people with small screens and not so great resolutions?

Oh - I'm also noticing there is a lot of wasted space on the sides and is there a way to reduce that wasted space to have more usable space for the block area?

Thanks for the help  :-*

Issue is that we added a code that fixes some design bugs, but makes the portal layout more sensible. If you were happy with what you had before updating, remove this code:

Code: [Select]
table-layout: fixed;
from ./Themes/default/portal.css file.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

You can make this if you want to make your them wider:

./Themes/Graybar/style.css

Code: (Find) [Select]
#controlWidth {width: 90%;
Code: (Replace) [Select]
#controlWidth {width: 99%;
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

Awesome - thanks so much - i'll take a crack at it.

Is there a standard resolution that I should be keeping in mind for future reference just so I don't encounter this in the future?

You're welcome, let us know how it goes. 1024x768 is the most common resolution I believe.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1769

I found this image resizer mod, but it only works w/ the beta release candidate of smf.  I'm a little afraid to put the beta files up on my site.

Do you know of any other image resizing mods that work with the SMF 1.1.9 or is it safe to use the beta version?

Edit:
I tried removing the line in the portal.css file
Code: [Select]
table-layout: fixed;
All that did was make the side blocks get smashed by the pictures instead of the other way around.

Oh - it's really amazing how a low resolution can make a site look just awful. I changed mine just to see what it was doing and it really changes the look of the site. The text is way too large and the pictures look horrible.

Generally sites look bad on smaller resolutions anyway. ;)

Optimizing your site for 1024x768 is probably best, as long as it looks okay on higher resolutions. I tend to ignore the really low ones.

Some image resize mods for SMF 1.1.9 (I haven't tried any of them):

sorry - finally figured out the name of my database was too generic and they were mixing up my files with someone else who had the exact same database name.  Seems to finally be stable and I haven't had the issue arise since I changed my db name. Thanks for all of your help
