Forum block shows on Portal
« on: October 01, 2010, 10:41:14 AM »
Hello.
I want to display a small message to guests on the top of the forum index but not on the standalone portal page.

I created a custom BBC block in the top area.
I initially set it for Show Block on "Forum" with no Advanced options but the block appears BOTH on the Forum Index and the Stand Alone Portal page.

I changed it to Advanced Options: Actions = Forum
It then appears on top of the forum index but it appears TWICE on the Stand Alone page!

I entered sforum: in the Custom display options box but there was no change to the above.

So, how do I get a block to appear JUST on the Forum Index page and possibly the two boards that Guests have access to and NOT on the portal page?

Any advice gratefully received.

That sounds like this bug: http://simpleportal.net/index.php?issue=364.0
Nathaniel gives a fix.

Please check if that fixes it.

Thanks Angelina, that fix cures the double showing of the block on the portal page but the original problem is still there. The block shows on the Portal page when I only want it to show on the Forum.

I have currently got the block set using advanced options.

Select Actions: Forum, Login & Register.

Custom Display Options: sforum (though this on it's own does not make the block appear anywhere).

So I need to fix why the block is showing on the Standalone Portal Page when it should not be.

I am at a loss.  I just tested this out -- custom BBC block, Display options forum (advanced display options unchecked).

Your files must be different from my files.

Have you tried using the advanced display option --- forum, -portal

Just to see if this gets around the problem?

Well I thought I had tested this option but I must have got them mixed up. So now all I have is Forum set as the Display on setting with Advanced Display Options UNCHECKED. Sure enough the block now appears just on the forum and not on the portal, just as I wanted it.

Thanks Angelina, problem solved. :)

Didn't understand this though, can you explain - just for future reference:

Using the custom display option "forum, -portal" tells SimplePortal to show that block on the Board Index, and to exclude it from being shown on the portal (so the '-portal' part is pointless if none of the options would mean that it is shown on the portal).

Thanks Natahniel.
I understand more now. As an Admin I can see this block on the Forum, where I want it for Guests but is there any way to preclude the visibility to Admins as well? It is a block only for guests after all.

You can do that with a little customization:
